The Family Kitchen: Homework, Meals and Mess
In most family homes the kitchen is also the office, the classroom and the laundry drop. Designing for all of it.
Accept what the room is really for
A family kitchen is used for homework, admin, charging devices and eating at least as much as for cooking. Planning only for cooking is why family kitchens end up permanently cluttered.
A surface that is not the worktop
Children doing homework on the prep worktop guarantees conflict at six in the evening. A table, an island end or a small desk return gives that activity its own home and keeps the cooking surface clear.
Charging, paperwork and the drop zone
Every family has a spot where bags, keys and papers land. Designing it, with a drawer, sockets and a shallow cupboard near the entrance, stops that spot becoming the worktop by the door.
Surfaces that forgive
Matte finishes, mid-tone timber and textured stone hide fingerprints and small damage far better than gloss white or very dark fronts. In a family kitchen that is a practical specification, not an aesthetic one.
Design the drop zone
Bags and papers will land somewhere. Give them a drawer and sockets, or they land on the worktop.
“A family kitchen is a cooking room for about two hours a day and something else for the other fourteen.”
