What to Know Before Choosing Matt Lacquer
- Finish character: a smooth, non-reflective surface that shows the shape of the door rather than the reflection of the window, and reads softer than gloss in a bright room
- Climate performance: the sprayed coating seals the substrate on all faces, which is what keeps a front stable through the humidity swings between an air-conditioned room and an open one
- Maintenance: fingerprints show far less than on gloss and wipe away with a damp cloth, but a deep scratch is more visible because there is no reflection to hide it
- Pairing with cabinetry: a neutral matt front lets brass hardware and a veined worktop become the things you notice, which is why it suits kitchens where the stone is the feature

Matt Colour Behaves Differently in Different Light
A matt surface takes its appearance from the light falling on it rather than from what it reflects, so the same colour looks warmer on a wall facing the garden and colder on the opposite side of the same room. Under warm downlights it shifts again. That is why samples are sprayed and viewed in the actual kitchen, at the time of day the room is used, rather than chosen from a fan deck under showroom lighting. It is also why a colour that looked right in a photograph often does not.
