Reading a Kitchen Quotation: What Should Be Itemised

Two quotes for the same kitchen can differ by half the price. Usually the difference is in what one of them left out.

Carcass and door specification by name

A quote should state the carcass board and grade, the door construction and the edge banding type. If it says only kitchen cabinets, you cannot compare it with anything, and the cheapest quote is usually cheap in the carcass.

Hardware by brand and model

Soft-close is not a specification. The quote should name the hinge and runner brand and model, because that single line explains a large part of any price difference between two otherwise identical kitchens.

Worktop, fabrication and what is excluded

Check whether templating, cut-outs, upstands, waterfall ends and the sink fitting are included or extra. These are the most common places for a low headline price to acquire additions later.

Installation, making good and the schedule

Confirm who handles electrical and plumbing connection, who makes good the walls afterwards, what the lead time is and what the payment stages are. A clear schedule is the best indicator that a supplier has done this before.

The test question

Ask which hinge brand is included. A supplier who cannot answer immediately has not specified the kitchen properly.

“The cheapest quote is rarely the cheapest kitchen.”
