Laminate and Melamine Door Finishes Explained
The most common kitchen finish in Thailand, and the most variable in quality. How to tell a good one from a bad one.

Melamine and laminate are not the same
Melamine is a decor paper fused directly to the board under heat. High-pressure laminate is a thicker sheet made separately and then bonded to a substrate. HPL is tougher and costs more; melamine is thinner and cheaper.
Why the edge matters most
Nearly every laminate door fails at the edge, not the face. Thin PVC edging applied with hot melt glue will lift in humid heat. Laser-edged or thick ABS edging with a proper bond is what separates a door that lasts from one that does not.
Texture and the synchronised finish
Modern melamines can be embossed in register with the printed grain, so the texture matches the pattern. At close range this is what makes a laminate door read as timber rather than as a photograph of timber.
Where laminate is the right answer
For rental properties, developer fit-outs, secondary kitchens and anyone who wants durability per baht, a good HPL door with laser-edged banding outperforms a cheap lacquered door every time.
Inspect the edge
Laminate doors fail at the edge first. Laser-edged or thick ABS banding is the detail worth paying for.
“Show me the edge banding and I will tell you how long the kitchen has.”
