Integrated Appliances and the Quiet Kitchen

Hiding the appliances behind cabinetry changes how a kitchen reads. What integrates well, what does not, and what it costs.

What integration actually means

An integrated appliance sits behind a door that matches the cabinetry, so the elevation reads as uninterrupted joinery. Fridges, dishwashers and washing machines integrate well; ovens and hobs generally do not and are not meant to.

Why it suits open-plan rooms

In a kitchen visible from the living area, a stainless fridge is the loudest object in the room. Integrating it removes that visual noise, which is the whole point of the quiet kitchen approach.

Why it suits open-plan rooms

Ventilation is non-negotiable

Integrated refrigeration needs its specified airflow at the plinth and above the unit. Blocking those gaps to make the joinery look tidier is the most common installation error we are asked to correct, and it kills compressors.

The cost and service trade-off

Integrated appliances cost more, have a narrower model choice and are harder to swap out when one fails. We usually integrate the fridge and dishwasher, and leave the oven and hob expressed as what they are.

Leave the gaps

Integrated fridges need their specified ventilation. Closing those gaps for neatness destroys compressors.

“A quiet kitchen is not one without appliances. It is one where you cannot see them.”
